Mantras

a magical utterance, a sacred sound

Man: heart, mind

Tra: instrument, device

A mantra is a sacred sound held within the heart and repeated either vocally or silently as a meditation device. Japa (repetition) mantra is to repeat a word or set of words enough to absorb the depth of meaning through sound, vibration and reflection. Ajapa (spontaneous) mantra happens of itself such as when you listen to the sound of the breath as So'ham or hamsa.

I bow to the lotus feet of the guru
who awakens insight into the happiness of pure Being,
who is the final refuge, the jungle physician,
who eliminates the delusion caused by the poisonous
herb of samsara [conditioned existence].

I prostrate before the sage Patanjali
who has thousands of radiant, white heads
[in his form as the divine serpent, Ananta]
and who has, as far as his arms,
assumed the form of a man holding a conch shell [divine sound],
a wheel [discus of light, representing infinite time]
and a sword [discrimination]. om

Let all beeings be happy and prosperous.

OM, protect us both, teacher and pupil.
Cause both to enjoy the Bliss of Liberation
May we find out the true meaning of the scriptures
May our learning be brilliant
May we never quarrel with each other.

Salutations to you, Saraswathi,
the giver of boons and who is delightful in form.
